Hey, I’m Jedain. Welcome to Skateboard Session, a place where my two-decade love affair with the New York skateboarding scene collides with the realities of being a 34-year-old dad in Ohio.
I started skating at age 13 in New York City in the early 2000s. My first board was nothing special, but it represented freedom. Inspired by hours of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, I took to the streets to test my real-life skills.
Every day brought new challenges and stories, from hitting new spots, to dodging security guards. But as adulthood set in, skating took a backseat. Responsibilities piled up, and my board gathered down.
Fast forward to today. I’m back on the board, but the landscape has shifted. The streets of New York have been swapped for the skateparks of Ohio. And me? I’m often the oldest guy at the park, a fact that’s equal parts hilarious and humbling.
But here’s the thing about skating: it doesn’t care how old you are or how long you’ve been away. It welcomes you back with open arms and a swift kick to the shins to remind you that you’re not as invincible as you once were. But that’s the beauty of it. Every slam and every wobble—they’re all part of the journey.
