What is a quarter pipe?

A quarter pipe is a skateboarding obstacle made up of a curved ramp that starts at ground level and ends at a vertical wall (but they dont always go as high as a full vertical wall). The ramp’s curved shape resembles a quarter of a circle, and the wall is typically around four feet tall. The dimensions of a quarter pipe can vary, but they are typically around 6–10 feet wide and 6–12 feet long.

What tricks can be done on a quarter pipe?

You can do a ton of tricks on quarter pipes. It all depends on how tall or wide they are. At my local skate park, we have a reasonably wide quarter pipe where you can do 50-50s. It’s not even that long, so you really don’t need that much width to get a good grind going.

You can also get some air on a quarter pipe depending how fast you’re coming onto the obstacle. And, of course, you can do your stalls like axle stalls, nose stalls, tail stalls, etc. So basically, you can do almost any trick on a quarter pipe. But I have to admit, they are not often very long, so getting a good long grind is a little tough. So maybe stick to the stalls and aerials.

Below are a couple of my favorite tricks to do on a quarter pipe:

  • Rock-and-roll
  • Axle stall
  • Nose stall
  • Disaster
  • Feeble
  • Salad stall
  • Smith stall

What are they made of?

Quarter pipes can be constructed from different materials, such as wood or concrete. Wooden quarter pipes are usually made out of plywood and 2x4s. They are relatively easy to build, and the materials are readily available.

Conversely, concrete quarter pipes are more durable and long-lasting, but they are harder to build and require more specialized tools and equipment.

Quarter-pipe maintenance tips

Maintaining a quarter pipe is important as is ensuring that the obstacle is in good condition for riders. Regular maintenance can help prevent accidents and prolong the life of the quarter pipe. Some of the ways to maintain a quarter pipe include:

  • Check the ramp’s surface regularly for cracks or debris. Fill in and smooth out any cracks or holes to prevent riders from catching their wheels on them. Remove debris to prevent riders from slipping or tripping.
  • Keeping the ramp’s surface clean and free of dirt and grime. This can be done by sweeping it. Keeping the surface clean will help improve traction and make the ramp safer to ride on.
  • Inspecting the ramp’s structure for any signs of damage or wear and tear. If any structural issues are found, they should be addressed immediately to prevent the ramp from collapsing or becoming unstable.
  • Checking and tightening all the hardware on the ramp, such as screws, bolts, and nuts, ensures they are secure and in good condition.
